FALL RECRUITMENT

Message from our DE, Matt Mower:

Hi Folks,

In the interest of getting any new Scouts and leaders registered as soon as
possible we are offering two different Race into Scouting Turn-in Nights
and Locations where you can come hand those in, and any other paperwork you
need to. If you plan on stopping by one of these nights try to let me know.

The first is Tuesday night (September 25th) at the Farmington McDonald’s
from 7-8pm. The second is at the Western Avenue McDonald’s in Augusta from
6-8pm on Wednesday (September 26th).

For those of you who have already done recruitment nights please let us
know (if we haven’t talked already) how you did as well as how you plan on
getting any paperwork or money in.

We will be able to take any additional applications you may bring us at the
October Roundtable. However, if you do have any paperwork now we encourage
you not to wait as we want to get these new Scouts registered and insured
by the BSA as soon as possible.

If you need any additional resources or have yet to set up a night up night
and would like our help don’t hesitate to contact me or your unit commissioner.

Thanks,

Matt Mower

K-Valley District Fall Merit Badge College

General Information:

The K-Valley Merit Badge College will be held at Farrington Elementary
School in Augusta on Monday evenings Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Nov. 5, and Nov.
19. Boys may register for two classes, 1 hour each. The first class will
begin at 6:00 p.m. and the second class will begin at 7:15 p.m.

Attached is a list of merit badges being offered as well as the contact
information for each of the counselors. The boys are responsible for
contacting the merit badge counselors to secure their spot in the
class. Below is a list of badges being offered.

1st Session
Citizenship in the Community
Citizenship in the Nation
Safety
Indian Lore
Computers
Genealogy

2nd Session

Crime Prevention
Citizenship in the World
Communications
First Aid
Safety
Computers

Each scout will need to bring a blue card for each merit badge he is
registered for. Each card must have the signature of a unit leader. Blue
cards need to be turned into the counselor at the first class meeting. If
scouts have access to the merit badge pamphlet for the badge(s) they are
taking they should bring them with them to each class session for reference.

There will be a short break in between sessions to allow instructors time
to set up and for scouts to make it to their next session. Scouts can
bring a snack with them to have during this 15-minute transition
time. However, food needs to be consumed in the cafeteria.

Parents picking up scouts at the end of the evening may wait in the
cafeteria. Scouts will report to the cafeteria after their last class session.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Karen Douglas at
626-2461 ext 3856 (school), 623-7298 (home), or at kdouglas@augustaschools.org

Scouts need to be registered by October 12th. I still need some adult
leaders or parents who are willing to sit in on merit badge sessions to
ensure that each session has two adults.

website at:

BSA 100th Anniversary Logo Contest
(by way of Matt Mowers and the latest Scouting Magazine and a few Scouter
discussion boards)

Calling all Scouts to a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be part of BSA history
in the making by participating in in the BSA 100th Anniversary Celebration
National Logo Contest!

In honor of BSA’s 100th anniversary, the National Council has launched a
contest to inspire the very best design for the anniversary celebration
logo. Every registered Scout is eligible to participate. The winning design
will become the official symbol for this very important BSA milestone. It
will be placed on all official celebration materials and will become a
treasured BSA icon for generations to come.

As a leader, you are asked to engage your Scouts in this project. Every
logo contest entrant will receive a commemorative certificate and patch
from the National Council recognizing their effort.

Tell the Scouts in your unit:

about the 100th anniversary
how they can participate in the logo design contest
and how easy it is to get involved!

A distinguished panel of judges will select winners in several categories,
including an overall winner and best design by a Tiger Cub/Cub
Scout,/Webelos Scout, Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, and Venturer. The winner in
each category will receive a trip, along with an adult guardian, to a May
2008 recognition ceremony at the BSA National Annual Meeting in San Diego,
Calif. In addition, the overall winner will also receive a trip, along with
an adult guardian, to work hand-in-hand with renowned graphic artist and
Eagle Scout Kit Hinrichs in his San Francisco studio to finalize the logo
for use throughout the celebration.

This is a great activity for individual Scouts and for den, pack, patrol,
troop, and crew meetings since entries can be submitted by individuals and
by groups! Entry forms, rules and details can be found on the BSA 100th
Anniversary Web site
.

So encourage your Scouts to rev up their creative juices and submit their
design ideas! Deadline for entries is November 30, 2007.
